Fellow In Hospital Medicine

Senior Fellow in Hospital Medicine (SFHM)

Earning your Senior Fellow designation will follow a similar process as becoming a Fellow. Additional criteria within the pillars of leadership, teamwork and quality improvement will enable candidates to demonstrate a higher level of performance and commitment to hospital medicine.

The candidate will have the ability to select from several categories of performance and experience to tailor the application to their practice experience.

Requirements

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR ADVANCEMENT TO SENIOR FELLOW IN HOSPITAL MEDICINE

To achieve Fellow in Hospital Medicine designation, applicants must successfully:

  1. Fulfill all of the "Necessary Eligibility Criteria" detailed below
  2. Demonstrate experience in hospital medicine leadership, teamwork, and quality improvement by achieving the requisite number of points from the "Core Hospital Medicine Competency" Criteria detailed below. Must reach 130 points.

Necessary Eligibility Criteria

Eligible Senior Fellow applicants must fulfill all of the following:

  1. MD, DO, or equivalent foreign degree and board certification in a specialty recognized by the ABMS (For Physician)

    PA Degree & NCCPA Certification (for PAs); MSN or DNP degree & ACC, AANP, ANCC, NCBPNP/N or NCC Certification (for NPs); Specialty in Internal Medicine (once available).

    Master's (MS, MBA, MPH, MHA etc) or equivalent foreign degree. (For Practice Administrators)

  2. Time spent on the combination of clinical and non-clinical work that is devoted to the practice of hospital medicine must comprise at least 50% of total professional activity
  3. Minimum number of 5 years as practicing hospitalist
  4. Minimum number of 5 years of SHM membership, 3 of which are consecutive
  5. Current SHM membership is in good standing, and payment of dues is up to date (a lapse in membership will result in loss of Senior Fellow status)
  6. Registration and attendance at a minimum of 1 SHM Annual Meeting PLUS one of the following:
    1. One additional SHM Annual Meeting
    2. One Regional Meeting (i.e. San Francisco, Southern, Midwest)
    3. One SHM Leadership Academy
    4. One National Pediatric Hospital Medicine Meeting (tri-sponsored by SHM, AAP and APA)
    5. One Canadian Hospital Medicine Society National Meeting
  7. Endorsement via letters of recommendation by 2 active SHM members who have been in good standing for at least 2 years
  8. No history of professional disciplinary action resulting in suspension or revocation of credentials or license within the past 5 years
