Information about SHM's Survey Process
SHM has historically conducted a bi-annual survey of the
characteristics of hospital medicine groups, including hospitalist
compensation and productivity. In 2009 SHM and the Medical Group
Management Association (MGMA) joined forces to jointly conduct the most
comprehensive and reliable survey of hospital medicine groups yet.
SHM and MGMA enjoyed a very successful survey collaboration in 2010
and 2011. Working together under a Survey Collaboration Agreement, the
two groups have been able to provide an unprecedented amount of high
quality information for our members—data about hospitalist compensation
and productivity, but also about many other aspects of the ways
hospitalists and hospital medicine groups function. And while our
relationship with MGMA remains strong, all good things must come to an
end—or at least change considerably.
Beginning in 2012, MGMA continues to collect compensation and
productivity information about hospitalists, and SHM has conducted a
separate survey on other characteristics of hospital medicine groups.
Data from both surveys will be combined in SHM's 2012 State of Hospital
Medicine report, again resulting in the most complete and authoritative
source of information about hospital medicine available anywhere.
