SOCIETY OF HOSPITAL MEDICINE RECOGNIZES SAMIR SHAH, MD, MSCE
WITH EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH AWARD
Shah presented with the Excellence in Research Award
PHILADELPHIA (March xx, 2009) - The Society of
Hospital Medicine (SHM) announced today that Samir Shah, MD, MSCE is the
recipient of the Society’s Excellence in Research Award for 2009.
Dr. Shah will be presented with this award at Hospital Medicine 2009,
SHM’s annual meeting, to be held May 14-17 in Chicago, IL.
Dr. Shah’s research seeks to improve the efficiency of the
management of children with common childhood infections, with a specific
focus on pneumonia and meningitis. His pneumonia-related research
includes developing predictive models to identify high-risk children
with community-acquired pneumonia, using observational study and
administrative data to determine optimal treatment for children with
pneumonia-related complications.
He served as editor and co-editor for several publications in the
fields of pediatrics and infectious disease, which include:
- The Philadelphia Guide: Inpatient Pediatrics (Lippincott, Williams,
and Wilkins 2005)
- Pediatric Infectious Diseases: The Requisites of Pediatrics (Mosby
2008)
- Pediatric Practice: Infectious Diseases (McGraw-Hill Medical
2009)
As a nationally recognized leader in hospital medicine, Dr. Shah
serves as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Epidemiology at the
University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and is an attending
physician in the Divisions of General Pediatrics and Infectious Diseases
at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
“As the hospital medicine specialty grows, it is important that
SHM continue to recognize and support research that expands the ability
of hospitalists to better serve the patients they see,” said
SHM’s CEO, Larry Wellikson, MD. “SHM is proud to recognize
Dr. Shah and his accomplishments in the field and celebrate the future
of hospital medicine.”
Dr. Shah completed his BA at the University of Pennsylvania, and
received his medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine. He
also completed his residency in Pediatrics and his fellowships in
Pediatric Infectious Diseases and Academic General Pediatrics at The
Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
SHM is the premier medical society representing hospitalists. Over
the past decade, studies have shown that hospitalists decrease patient
lengths of stay, reduce hospital costs and readmission rates, all while
increasing patient satisfaction. Hospital medicine is the
fastest-growing specialty in modern healthcare, with over 28,000
hospitalists currently practicing and an upward growth trajectory in
full force. For more information about SHM, visit www.hospitalmedicine.org.
