Medicine Announces New Masters in Hospital Medicine, Awards of Excellence Recipients and Board
Appointments (Philadelphia, PA, April 2, 2012) –
The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM), the leading organization
representing hospitalists, is proud to announce the induction of three
new Masters in Hospital Medicine, the appointment of three members to
its board of directors, and six Award of Excellence recipients.
“SHM depends on the vision and talent of its leaders to guide not
only our organization, but the direction of healthcare overall and how
patients receive care,” says newly elected SHM President Shaun
Frost. “The individuals who are being recognized this year as
Masters in Hospital Medicine, award recipients and newly appointed board
of directors are the ones driving the hospital medicine specialty
forward.”
The Master in Hospital Medicine designation is the highest honor awarded
by SHM and is by nomination only, based on the individual’s
contribution to the hospital medicine specialty and his or her
commitment to excellence in fields such as clinical care, healthcare
initiatives, research, writing and publication, and administrative
positions. SHM’s newest Masters in Hospital Medicine, who will be
joining the current seven Masters, are Patrick J. Cawley, MD, MBA, CPE,
FACP, FACHE, MHM; Mark V. Williams, MD, FACP, MHM and Peter K.
Lindenauer, MD, MSc, FACP, MHM.
In addition to the three new Masters in Hospital Medicine, SHM will
induct 133 Fellows in Hospital Medicine (FHM) and 53 Senior Fellows in
Hospital Medicine (SFHM) in San Diego. SHM also has announced its
annual Awards of Excellence recipients. The work of these hospitalists
is paving the way for thousands of other hospitalists to improve the
quality of research, teamwork, service and care of patients in the

Teaching: Jeffrey Barsuk, MD, MS, FHM Award for
Clinical Excellence: Douglas Carlson, MD, SFHM Award for Excellence in Research: Ron Keren, MD,
MPH

imperative that we work together to improve the quality of care that is
delivered with high efficiency,” says SHM CEO Larry Wellikson, MD,
SFHM. “We’re pleased to announce these award recipients, as
well as three new board member appointments to help strengthen our team

SHM has appointed three new members to its board of directors: Jeffrey
J. Glasheen, MD, SFHM, Nasim Afsar-Manesh, MD, SFHM and Brian Harte, MD,
SFHM. SHM board members are elected by SHM members and serve for a
