Society of Hospital Medicine Announces New Masters in Hospital Medicine,
Awards of Excellence Recipients and Board Appointments

(Philadelphia, PA, April 2, 2012) – The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM), the leading organization representing hospitalists, is proud to announce the induction of three new Masters in Hospital Medicine, the appointment of three members to its board of directors, and six Award of Excellence recipients.

“SHM depends on the vision and talent of its leaders to guide not only our organization, but the direction of healthcare overall and how patients receive care,” says newly elected SHM President Shaun Frost. “The individuals who are being recognized this year as Masters in Hospital Medicine, award recipients and newly appointed board of directors are the ones driving the hospital medicine specialty forward.”
The Master in Hospital Medicine designation is the highest honor awarded by SHM and is by nomination only, based on the individual’s contribution to the hospital medicine specialty and his or her commitment to excellence in fields such as clinical care, healthcare initiatives, research, writing and publication, and administrative positions. SHM’s newest Masters in Hospital Medicine, who will be joining the current seven Masters, are Patrick J. Cawley, MD, MBA, CPE, FACP, FACHE, MHM; Mark V. Williams, MD, FACP, MHM and Peter K. Lindenauer, MD, MSc, FACP, MHM.

In addition to the three new Masters in Hospital Medicine, SHM will induct 133 Fellows in Hospital Medicine (FHM) and 53 Senior Fellows in Hospital Medicine (SFHM) in San Diego.

SHM also has announced its annual Awards of Excellence recipients. The work of these hospitalists is paving the way for thousands of other hospitalists to improve the quality of research, teamwork, service and care of patients in the hospital.
