Current Education Initiatives
SHM has charged the Education Committee as well as related groups
such as the Academic and Annual Meeting committees with defining the
organizational program that enhances education in all aspects of
hospital medicine and that establishes SHM as a leader in education for
hospitalists. The success of SHM’s education programs will be
determined by the extent to which they measurably improve patient
outcomes through enhancement of medical knowledge, clinical competence,
and performance. The current initiatives focus on:
Assessing the community’s educational needs
A comprehensive needs assessment is underway, tied in a significant
way to The Core Competencies in Hospital Medicine: A Framework for
Curriculum Development. The results will define the direction
relative to meeting content, topics for CME modules, and use of new
media for the next several years.
Defining an exciting new program for Hospital Medicine 2008 -
SHM’s Annual Meeting
The Annual Meeting Committee, under the auspices of the Education
Committee, has implemented a new process via call for proposals and
speakers for identifying content and faculty, with the intent of
broadening participation in the organization’s most important
educational event. The annual meeting program features an
Evidence-Based Rapid Fire Track, which is sure to be exciting to
attendees. In October, check
out the Annual Meeting area of the website for additional
information.
Developing a Teaching Skills pre-course (to be offered at Hospital
Medicine 2008)
As experts in the field, the Education Committee has the lead on
defining a Teaching Skills pre-course for the clinical
educator. The pre-course is intended to appeal to the beginner to
moderately experienced educator that focuses on topics such as how to
create curriculum; clinical/bedside teaching skills; microskills
teaching; giving and receiving effective feedback. In October, check
out the Annual Meeting area of the website for additional
information.
Enhancing offerings for Academic Hospitalists
Academic Hospitalists are a very important core group within SHM.
Their needs are unique and SHM is developing resources that may be
helpful in their role as educator, researcher, and clinician. Visit
the Academic
Hospital Medicine area of the website for additional
information.
Developing a new CME module on Team Communications
The Heart Failure Initiative has produced two important CME modules
for improving patient care: Palliative Care for Patients With Heart
Failure and Optimizing the Heart Failure Discharge
Transition. Currently in development is a module on Team
Communications, expected to be completed in the spring of 2008. Watch
for announcements or visit the CME
section of the Heart Failure Resource Room.
