The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) now provide general internists practicing in the hospital setting the ability to maintain Internal Medicine Certification With a Focused Practice in Hospital Medicine.

Hospital Medicine is the first area to be awarded focused practice recognition by ABIM, a major milestone in the field.

SHM strongly encourages Focused Practice in Hospital Medicine to demonstrate skill and expertise as a specialist in Hospital Medicine.

Once you are enrolled in Maintenance of Certification (MOC), complete the following to maintain Internal Medicine Certification With a Focused Practice in Hospital Medicine:

• Possess a valid and unrestricted license to practice medicine
• Pass a MOC exam in Hospital Medicine
• Earn 100 points of Self-Evaluation
