What is SHM?

The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) is the medical society dedicated to representing hospitalists-physicians whose primary professional focus is the general medical care of hospitalized patients. Hospitalists' activities include patient care, teaching, research, and leadership related to hospital care. SHM is the premier organization developed specifically to support and enhance the practice of hospitalists and the patients that they serve.

Mission Statement

• To promote high quality care for all hospitalized patients
• To promote education and research in hospital medicine
• To promote teamwork to achieve the best possible care for hospitalized patients
• To advocate a career path which will attract and retain the highest quality hospitalists
• To define the competencies, activities, and needs of the hospitalist community
• To support, propose, and promote changes to the health care system that lead to higher quality and more efficient care for all hospitalized patients

Who is eligible to join SHM?

Physician Members
Practicing hospitalists (including those focused on research or education) are eligible to become members of SHM. Physician Members are eligible to vote.

Resident/Fellow-in-Training Members
Physicians in residency and fellowship training are eligible to become members of SHM. Resident/Fellow-in-Training Members cannot vote until they become Physician Members.

Medical Student Members
Medical Students are eligible to become members of SHM. Medical Student Members pay no dues and are not eligible to vote.

Affiliates
“Nonphysicians who wish to be a part of SHM (including health care policy analysts, medical librarians, etc.) are eligible to become affiliates of SHM. Affiliate members are eligible to vote.”

Allied Health Professionals
Allied Health Professionals include all nonphysician clinicians (e.g. nurse practitioners, physician assistants). Allied Health professionals are eligible to vote.
