Study Shows Hospitalists Reduce Patient’s Time in the Hospital

A new study in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that hospitalists, physicians who care for hospitalized patients, reduce a patient’s length of stay in the hospital by almost half a day.

This year's meeting, to be held at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center, will mark SHM's first decade as an organization, and will celebrate the many achievements of hospitalists over the last ten years.

Society of Hospital Medicine Marks 10-Year Anniversary

Ten years ago - in early 1997 - a handful of physicians banded together to launch the Society of Hospital Medicine (formerly called the National Association of Inpatient Physicians). This brand new medical society was the first organization to formally recognize the nation's "hospitalists" - a new breed of physician dedicated solely to the care and treatment of hospitalized patients. It remains today the only professional society representing hospitalists.

American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Hospital Association Announce New Quality Improvement Tool for Hospital-Based Patient Care

The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and American Hospital Association (AHA) today announced the release of a web-based tool to help physicians in internal medicine enhance the quality of care they provide to their hospital patients. This tool, jointly developed with the American College of Cardiology and with the participation of the Society for Hospital Medicine and American College of Physicians, allows physicians to review current clinical practice guidelines for heart attacks, heart failure and community-acquired pneumonia against their own hospital's practice.

Society of Hospital Medicine Launches Nation's First Core Competencies Program For Hospital Medicine

The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM), the premier society representing hospitalists, has published the nation's first comprehensive guidelines to assist medical schools, post-graduate training programs and continuing medical education programs in the development of standardized curricula for the teaching of hospital medicine. The guidelines are published in The Core Competencies in Hospital Medicine: A Framework for Curriculum Development, which is being provided free to SHM members, deans of medical schools, and to internal medicine and family practice residency program directors nationwide beginning in February.

Society of Hospital Medicine to Launch Journal of Hospital Medicine in February 2006

The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM), the premier medical society representing hospitalists, is launching a new peer-reviewed medical journal, the Journal of Hospital Medicine, in February 2006 to promote the science and practice of hospital medicine and the enhancement of hospital care. The Journal of Hospital Medicine will be the nation's first and only peer-reviewed journal devoted exclusively to the publication of research and evidence-based reviews in the area of hospital medicine. Included with the inaugural issue will be a special supplement, "The Core Competencies in Hospital Medicine: A Framework for Curriculum Development by the Society of Hospital Medicine."

The average hospitalist today sees more than 2,200 hospitalized patients per year and receives a total annual compensation package (salary and bonus) of $155,000 per year, according to the newly released 2004 Hospitalist Productivity and Compensation Survey conducted by the Society of Hospital Medicine.
