Ten years ago - in early 1997 - a handful of physicians banded together
to launch the Society of Hospital Medicine (formerly called the National
Association of Inpatient Physicians). This brand new medical society was

hospitalized patients. It remains today the only professional society

Hospital-Based Patient Care

The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and American Hospital
Association (AHA) today announced the release of a web-based tool to
help physicians in internal medicine enhance the quality of care they
provide to their hospital patients. This tool, jointly developed with
the American College of Cardiology and with the participation of the
Society for Hospital Medicine and American College of Physicians, allows
physicians to review current clinical practice guidelines for heart
attacks, heart failure and community-acquired pneumonia against their
own hospital's practice.

hospitalists, has published the nation's first comprehensive guidelines
to assist medical schools, post-graduate training programs and
continuing medical education programs in the development of standardized
curricula for the teaching of hospital medicine. The guidelines are
published in The Core Competencies in Hospital Medicine: A Framework for
Curriculum Development, which is being provided free to SHM members,
deans of medical schools, and to internal medicine and family practice
residency program directors nationwide beginning in February.

journal, the Journal of Hospital Medicine, in February 2006 to promote
the science and practice of hospital medicine and the enhancement of
hospital care. The Journal of Hospital Medicine will be the nation's
first and only peer-reviewed journal devoted exclusively to the
publication of research and evidence-based reviews in the area of
hospital medicine. Included with the inaugural issue will be a special
supplement, "The Core Competencies in Hospital Medicine: A Framework for
Curriculum Development by the Society of Hospital Medicine."
