As Health Information Technology transforms the delivery of health
care in this country, training and education in informatics will become
increasingly important for frontline hospitalists. This site was
prepared by SHM IT Leadership and Education subcommittee members to
assist SHM members seeking more knowledge about Health Information
Technology as well as education and training opportunities in

10x10 probably is the best entry level formal education in clinical
informatics – hybrid of online and live meetings (at AMIA
annual meeting). An excellent comprehensive introduction to the
field. One-week course in Woods Hole sponsored by
NLM. This requires an application process, but the course is
free if accepted. Introductory training for medical students at Lister
Hill National Center for Biomedical
Communications ConferencesAMIA annual
meeting. This is the premiere scientific meeting for
biomedical informatics. Excellent educational offerings and great
networking opportunities. Conferences on Bioinformatics and
research informatics are also detailed in this section of the AMIA
website. HIMSS calendar of events – regional, national,
and international meetings. Non-Degree Education &
TrainingHIMSS e-Learning Academy. This is a very
comprehensive array of online training/education; topics are mostly
concerned with practical knowledge and skills in informatics.
Skills in leading or participating implementation, developing clinical
decision support, and knowledge in current industrial trends and
governmental initiatives are all well represented in these
modules. American Telemedicine Association (ATA) - online
certificate courses, webinars, and live meetings with
focus. Formal Degree ProgramsThere is a growing list of formal education
opportunities, at various levels, both live or online, across the
U.S. This directory is maintained by AMIA and includes
informatics trainings for all clinicians. Online certificate and
master programs are most in demand and the numbers of these programs are
steadily growing. Certified Professionals in Healthcare Information and
Management Systems – mostly geared toward non-clinicians
FellowshipsNLM sponsored, University-based Biomedical Informatics
Research fellowship. These are funded fellowship programs for
post-doctoral candidates at established university programs. These
are intended to train clinicians interested in pursuing an academic
career in biomedical informatics. Students in these programs are
