Fundamentals of Inpatient Coding and Documentation: Getting Paid What You Deserve

Course Overview

This program is designed to enhance the ability of practicing hospitalists to document and code the clinical services they provide. The course will focus on helping physicians develop medical decision-making and documentation habits that will support the optimal CPT code for the services rendered. Coding rules for the most common categories of service provided by hospitalists will be presented, and typical problem areas within each of the categories will be discussed. Faculty presentations will include practice case studies and multiple opportunities for questions and answers.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Implement the principles of a consistent process of medical decision-making that supports proper clinical documentation
  • Discuss what is required to efficiently, accurately and completely document the clinical services performed
  • Select CPT codes for the most common inpatient care encounters that facilitate accurate and optimal professional fee billing

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the American College of Physicians (ACP) and the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM). The ACP is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing education for physicians.

The American College of Physicians designates the educational activity for a maximum number for each course of category 1 credit toward the AMA Physician Recognition Award as follows: Coding and Documentation for 7.25 credits. Each physician should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in each educational activity.
