Essential Procedures for the Hospitalist:  A Hands-On Experience

Course Overview

Using a combination of didactic sessions and hands-on training, participants will learn how to use ultrasound for safe and accurate vascular access, paracentesis, and thoracentesis.  Skin biopsies and lumbar punctures will also be demonstrated and practiced.  With a 1:3 faculty to participant ratio, non-human tissue models and simulator models will be employed to teach proper techniques for a number of essential procedures.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe and perform the proper techniques for invasive procedures
  • Apply the use of real-time ultrasound guidance for invasive procedures
  • Employ wide sterile barriers (WSB) for sterile procedures utilize proper sharps safety techniques
