Jeffrey H. Barsuk, MD, FACP

Jeffrey H. Barsuk is a Hospitalist in the Division of Hospital Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.  He serves as the Division’s Director of Residency Education, Associate Chief of the Resident Hospitalist Track, and has run the procedure team at Northwestern Memorial Hospital since its inception four years ago.  He has developed a resident procedure curriculum as well contributing to the internal medicine curriculum.  He is famous among residents for coining the term, “I will teach you until you bleed!”

As an Assistant Professor of Medicine, for the past three years Dr. Barsuk has focused his research efforts on optimizing procedure performance through utilization of simulation technology. These efforts were based on the mastery in learning theoretical framework.  His research group in medical education is unique in their rigorous methods for standards setting in resident training.  They have published several articles on this topic and have shown how their training improves patient care.

Dr. Barsuk graduated from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and completed a residency in Internal Medicine through the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.  He was one of the first three hospitalists at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and helped to shape the development of that program which now exceeds 40 hospitalists.

Dr. Barsuk’s teaching activities are not only focused in procedure training.  He teaches Medical Ethics to first year medical students, he mentors students in clinical exam and history taking skills, and he teaches evidence based medicine to third year medical students.  As Key Clinical Faculty, Dr. Barsuk is extremely involved in resident education and lectures to medical students, residents, and attendings on procedures and gives case conferences.  He has won several Department of Medicine teaching awards.

His other research interests include the quality of care in congestive heart failure.  He is the hospitalist Director of the [new] Heart Failure Unit at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and has written and implemented patient care protocols.   Dr. Barsuk also serves as a group leader on the Society of Hospital Medicine’s Observation Unit Initiative for Heart Failure and played a key role in writing the Society’s consensus paper on observation unit heart failure management.
