Course Overview

The 2009 Quality Course has been re-designed to expose hospitalists of all experience levels to effective quality improvement projects. In an interactive format, multiple successful QI projects will be profiled by the hospitalists who have led them. Participants will have a chance to see key QI principles reappear in each project, while also gaining exposure to alternative strategies. The participant may choose from one of three sessions: VTE, Glycemic Control, or Care Transitions.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe how a hospitalist can communicate a vision to lead improvement in hospital care.
  • Describe the power of standardization, especially when coupled with high reliability strategies.
  • Describe features of a useful data system and how an effective multidisciplinary team can achieve specific performance goals.

  • Quality and Leadership                         
  • Standardization, Reliability, and Measure-vention           
  • VTE, glycemic control, and transitions of care quality improvement

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the American College of Physicians (ACP) and the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM). The ACP is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing education for physicians.

The American College of Physicians designates the educational activity for a maximum number for each course of category 1 credit toward the AMA Physician Recognition Award as follows: Quality Improvement Skills for 7.5 credits. Each physician should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in each educational activity.
