Teaching Hospitalist Educators (THE) Course:  What Clinical Teachers in Hospital Medicine Need to Know

Course Overview

This pre-course is designed to be practical, empowering hospitalists to immediately return to their home institutions and enact measures that will show immediate results in their educational skills. Utilizing SHM’s Core Competencies in Hospital Medicine, the pre-course will provide a competency-based model of physician education, with equal emphasis on performance-based competencies such as procedures, communication, interpersonal skills, and practice-based learning.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Optimize performance in each of the hospitalist teaching venues: at the bedside, in the conference room, in the large lecture hall
  • Integrate SHM Core Competencies into resident and student training
  • Access a system of hospitalist educators who will serve as the initial networking group for exchanging resources and curriculum

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the American College of Physicians (ACP) and the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM). The ACP is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing education for physicians.

The American College of Physicians designates the educational activity for a maximum number for each course of category 1 credit toward the AMA Physician Recognition Award as follows: Teaching Hospitalist Educators for 8.25 credits. Each physician should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in each educational activity.
