In order to promote the very best in hospital medicine education, the Society of Hospital Medicine Award for Excellence in Teaching is presented in recognition of outstanding teaching in hospital medicine.

Consideration will be given to nominees who have demonstrated outstanding teaching prowess and who have served as role models and mentors to other hospitalists, residents, medical students, or other healthcare professionals. Individuals from academic and community practice settings are eligible.

Criteria for Evaluation

While all of the following may not apply to each candidate, the Awards Committee will use the following criteria as a basis for evaluation:

  • Dedication to the discipline of teaching
  • Focus on excellence in teaching at the bedside
  • Leadership in the advancement of innovative educational curricula
  • Outstanding contributions in medical instruction or medical education administration
  • Established role model or mentor to students

Eligibility for Awards

Any current SHM member other than board members, officers, or SHM Awards Committee members is eligible to apply.
Please note: All nominees must be SHM members. Nominees may be self-nominated.

Submission Requirements

All submissions for the Excellence in Teaching Award require the following:

  • Nominee's name, title, organization, phone number and email address (if this is not a self-nomination, include your relationship to the nominee)
  • A letter consisting of at least one paragraph, not to exceed one page, either self-nomination or from another party, addressing the specific criteria, which are the basis for evaluation for the award of the nominee being considered
