Orthopedic Hospitalists and Hospital Medicine

An orthopedic hospitalist is an inpatient orthopedic specialist.

In many hospitals today, any orthopedic issue that presents to the emergency room will be addressed by the on-duty hospitalist. Also, inpatient consults from other services may be addressed by orthopedic hospitalists.

An orthopedic hospitalist can address:

  • Hip fractures in the elderly
  • Ankle fractures in the young and old
  • Wrist fractures from typical falls
  • Pediatric forearm fractures from sports or playground accidents

Depending on the capability of the hospital, the orthopaedic hospitalist may also be a full-fledged traumatologist taking care of the multiply injured in concert with the trauma team. In most places, however, orthopaedic hospitalists can be considered “Community Orthopaedic Traumatologists,” as named by Dr. Timothy Bray in the Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma.(1)

Orthopaedic hospitalists become the face of the hospital for those in the community with musculoskeletal injuries, both in the emergency room and in the follow-up clinic. Orthopaedic hospitalists partner with the hospital administration and its medical staff in assist in the care of the community.
