Who is a hospitalist?

A Hospitalist is a practitioner who is engaged in clinical care, teaching, research, and/or leadership in the field of hospital medicine.

Practitioners of hospital medicine include:


Practicing hospitalist physicians (including those focused on research or education)

Nurse Practitioners & Physician Assistants

Practicing hospitalist NPs and PAs


Non-clinicians working in hospital medicine (including practice administrators, healthcare policy analysts, medical librarians, etc)

Allied Health Professionals

Registered nurses, hospital pharmacists and other non-physician clinicians


Physicians in residency and fellowship programs

Medical Students

Individuals enrolled in accredited medical programs (includes MD, DO, NP, PA, etc)
Students are eligible to join SHM at no cost.


Non-US and non-Canadian individuals are eligible to join SHM at a reduced membership rate with unique benefits
