Certificate of Leadership in Hospital Medicine

Requirements

Attendance of the Leadership Foundations Leadership Academy is required prior to registering for your Certificate of Leadership in Hospital Medicine.
Participants in the Certificate of Leadership in Hospital Medicine (CLHM) program have five years from the start of the program to complete all program requirements, which include coursework, professional development planning and a required project (detailed below). Participants must be prepared to submit their project proposal within 90 days of applying to the CLHM program.
Participants also develop individualized instructional plans and select webinars in support of their career and project goals.
Current Alumni of the Leadership Academies can apply coursework completed at the time of application and will have the entire five-year time period to complete all requirements.
Attendance of the Leadership Foundations Leadership Academy is required prior to registering for Leadership Certification.

  1. Prerequisite -- Prerequisite – Leadership Foundations
  2. Advanced Leadership: Influential Management
  3. Advanced Leadership: Mastering Teamwork

Optional Webinar:

  1. Developing an Action Plan for Your Leadership Project (strongly recommended)
    Offered live annually, or view archived version

Required Professional Development Planning:

Participants will receive faculty support to complete the following components:

  1. Creation of a Professional Development Plan
  2. Completion of a 360 Evaluation Process

Required Project
Participants must be prepared to submit their project proposal within 30 days of applying to the CLHM program.
Leadership projects are designed to allow participants to apply skills obtained through coursework to specific hospital medicine challenges. Participants will design their own projects and submit proposals for approval. In general, projects, which are expected to take about a year to complete, may be selected from these categories:

  • Quality (e.g., Implement a DVT prevention program)
  • Service (e.g., Expand, develop a new line of service)
  • People (e.g., Create a development and retention program)
  • Operations (e.g., Develop a coding and documentation management program, or Risk Management Program)
  • Financial (e.g., Resource utilization)
  • Training & Education (e.g., Develop/implement new resident curriculum)
  • Original research in Hospital Medicine
  • Design your own/integrated project (requires approval)

Required activities related to the project include:

  1. Proposal submission and review
  2. Analysis of outcomes/findings
  3. Presentation & review of outcomes

Self-Directed Learning:

Participants will have access to an array of training and development resources and will have the opportunity to work with mentors and curriculum specialists to develop an individualized instructional plan.
