The Certificate of Leadership in Hospital Medicine (CLHM) from the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) encourages hospitalists to apply their leadership skills in the context of specific hospital medicine challenges through completion of an executive level leadership project.

The program is designed to prepare candidates to succeed in hospital medicine practice settings and create a professional development plan to match their personal career aspirations to physician executive positions such as Vice President of Medical Affairs (VPMA), Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Chief Quality Officer (CQO), Chief Executive Officer (CEO), department chair and other leadership roles.

Successful completion of the program requires participation in SHM's three highly acclaimed Leadership Academy courses, in addition to completion of an approved high-level leadership project. The culminating final report includes presentation of project outcomes, reflection on applied leadership concepts and an institutional performance and growth evaluation.

To support their successful completion of a leadership project, candidates are paired with field experts who provide consultation at several stages of the project life cycle. Participants are also enrolled in an online community of leadership faculty and peers and invited to participate in alumni events, which are designed to help build a lifelong professional network.
