Mayo Clinic Acute Care of the Complex Hospitalized Patient for NPs & PAs
February 8, 2018 at 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

As hospital care models continue to evolve; NPs and PAs are playing an increasingly vital role in the care delivery of hospitalized patients. This conference focuses on providing the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines and treatment pathways necessary to optimally care for hospitalized patients. The course is applicable to hospitalists, NPs, PAs, APNs and RNs and features multiple skills workshops (suturing, critical care, ECG) to further tailor the educational needs of NPs and PAs.

Objectives:

  • Formulate an action plan based on scientific rationale, evidence-based standards of care, and practice guidelines.
  • Initiate appropriate and timely consultation and/or referral when necessary.
  • Describe assessment, current guidelines and drug therapies for VTE.
  • Explain heart failure management in complex hospitalized patients.

The Difficult Airway Course: Critical Care

Taught by a world-class faculty the course focuses exclusively on airway challenges posed by critically ill inpatients. Emphasizes airway assessment and decision-making to build in each attendee the capacity to manage all airway situations encountered - and to do so with great confidence.

Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  1. Have a clear conceptual framework of Airway Management in critical care practice.
  2. Have a rapid and systematic approach for the management of the difficult and failed airway.
  3. Be familiar with the devices and techniques needed to manage the difficult and failed airway; and when and how to use them.
  4. Be able to perform a cricothyrotomy.
  5. Be able to assess and manage a difficult airway extubation.

Recognizing the Significance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Resistance: Where Do We Stand Today?

This program builds awareness of the prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant and MDR P. aeruginosa in US hospitals and the challenges associated with this pathogen. Interprofessional expert faculty Keith S. Kaye, MD, Professor of Medicine, University of Michigan Medical School, and Keith A. Rodvold, PharmD, Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Medicine, University of Illinois at Chicago provide the most up-to-date information on:

  • Epidemiology and burden of P. aeruginosa infections.
  • P. aeruginosa mechanisms of resistance.
  • CDC Patient Safety Atlas data on antimicrobial-resistant P. aeruginosa.
  • In vitro susceptibility data of current antipseudomonal agents.

Objectives:

  • Describe the unique characteristics of P. aeruginosa and the challenges associated with managing serious infections caused by this organism.
  • Identify the various mechanisms utilized by P. aeruginosa that enable this pathogen to exhibit resistance to commonly-used antimicrobial agents.
  • Interpret the latest CDC surveillance data on the prevalence of resistant and multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa infections at local, regional, and national levels.
