Russell L. Holman, MD, MHM
LifePoint Hospitals

Russell L. Holman, MD, MHM, is the Chief Medical Officer for LifePoint Hospitals, a system of 60 hospitals in 20 states serving non-urban communities. Formerly, Dr. Holman served for 8 years in executive roles with Cogent Healthcare and for 10 years in leadership positions for HealthPartners, an integrated health system based in Minneapolis/St. Paul. During his career, Dr. Holman founded one of the earliest hospitalist programs, created one of the nation's first postgraduate fellowship programs in hospital medicine, served as an internal medicine residency program director, and has co-authored and co-edited the reference textbook Comprehensive Hospital Medicine. Dr. Holman graduated from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and completed his residency and chief residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Minnesota. His pioneering work in hospital medicine has rendered nationally recognized standards in the areas of quality improvement, care model innovations, medical education, and physician leadership. Dr. Holman is a former board member and past president of the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM). During his presidency, Dr. Holman was invited to testify before the Senate Finance Committee on value-based purchasing, and also appeared with Don Berwick at the IHI Annual Forum to announce the 5 Million Lives Campaign. He founded the SHM Leadership Committee, serves as the course director of the SHM Physician Leadership Academies, and is founder of the SHM Leadership Certification Program. He chaired the 2005 SHM Annual Meeting and has been a frequent speaker at national and regional meetings. He was recognized for his contributions to the field by receiving the SHM Award for Outstanding Service in Hospital Medicine in 2002, and in 2011 was inducted as Master of Hospital Medicine.


Eric Rice, MD, MMM, SFHM

Presents:Advanced Leadership: Mastering Teamwork

Dr. Eric Rice used the leadership training and experience he acquired in the Army to create the first hospitalist program in Omaha. Dr. Rice later received a Masters of Medical Management at the University of Southern California. Dr. Rice currently leads multidisciplinary teams at Methodist Hospital in Omaha to improve clinical processes. He also collaborates with other hospitalist programs in the region to improve their operations.

Dr. Rice studied molecular biology at Creighton University before attending medical school and residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He serves on the Leadership Committee of SHM and is a Senior Fellow. Dr. Rice founded the Nebraska Area Chapter of the SHM and is the current president. He serves other organizations, including the Editorial Board for Today's Hospitalist. Dr. Rice is excited to be a part of SHM's Advanced Leadership seminars.



Nick Marzano, MEd
Director, Digital Learning

Mr. Marzano joined the Society of Hospital Medicine in August of 2011 and serves as Director, Digital Learning. His primary responsibilities include managing the educational content of SHM's Leadership franchise, as well as the content and program logistics of Leadership Certification program. Mr. Marzano also manages products and services related to physician certification.

Prior to SHM, Mr. Marzano worked as Team Lead, Enrollment for Big Brothers Big Sisters Southeastern PA. He earned his MEd in Curriculum and Instruction from Penn State University in 2010, and holds a bachelor's degree in English.
