1996 - The term “hospitalist” is coined in The New England Journal of Medicine by Robert Wachter, MD and Lee Goldman, MD.
1997 - The National Association of Inpatient Physicians (NAIP) is formed by John Nelson, MD and Winthrop Whitcomb, MD.
2003 - With 3,500 members, NAIP is re-named the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM).
2016 – SHM recognizes its 15,000th member during Hospital Medicine 2016- the largest hospitalist conference in history.
