SHM New York City/ Westchester Abstract Competition
The NYC/Westchester Chapter of the Society of Hospital Medicine is hosting their third Research, Innovations and Vignettes Abstract Competition in Hospital Medicine for students, residents and fellows.

The deadline to submit an abstract is Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at 12:00 p.m.

March 2017
On Tuesday, March 28, 2017, the New York City/Westchester Chapter held a meeting at Bond Street Restaurant in New York City, New York. Approximately 40 attendees from thirteen different hospital medicine groups were present.
Lex Zaharoff, MBA, Harvard Business and Adjunct Professor of Finance at NYU Stern School of Business, gave a brief presentation on Retirement Planning and Asset Protection. Valerie Gausman, MD from NYU Medical Center, winner of the local RIV Poster Competention then presenter her poster on Orthodoxia.
Our main speaker, Robert J. Fakheri, MD, NYU Medical Center gave a CME accredited presentation on the Role of Procalcitonin in Hospitalized Patients.

August 2016

On Tuesday, August 16, 2016, the New York City/Westchester Chapter held a meeting at Gaucho Grill in White Plains, New York. Approximately 20 attendees from six different hospital medicine groups were present.

Key Take-Home Points:
  1. Identify heart failure patients by their clinical profiles and phenotypes and assess comorbid conditions.
  2. Produce the diagnosis of acute heart failure based on clinical presentation, history, labs and radiologic findings.
  3. Integrate the data of relevant clinical trials and the evidence to support use of current therapies.
  4. Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to properly assess when HF patients need to be admitted to hospital vs. observation vs. discharge.
  5. Describe evidence-based practices, including methods to improve care for transitions for HF patients once they are ready for discharge. All attendees participated in sharing some of their institutional experiences that contributed to delayed care and sepsis recognition in the past. The new sepsis tools and team roles should facilitate improvement in expedited care and better outcomes for those ward patients cared for by hospitalists.

All attendees participated in sharing some of their institutional experiences and treatment practices with respect to heart failure.


June 2016
On Thursday, June 23, 2016, the New York City/Westchester Chapter held a meeting at KEE Oyster House in White Plains, New York. Approximately 22 attendees from six different hospital medicine groups were present.

Savneek Chugh, MD, an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology at NY Medical College, spoke on approaches to renal failure in the hospitalized patient. Also, Richard Zimmerman, a healthcare attorney, spoke on important points to consider when negotiating a healthcare contract.


April 2016
On Tuesday, April 5, 2016 the New York City/Westchester Chapter held a meeting at Capital Grille in New York, New York. Approximately 45 people from 11 different hospital medicine groups attended. Ron Greeno, MD, FCCP, MHM, President-Elect, Society of Hospital Medicine, presented on “Health Care Policy and Its Impact on Hospitalists.”

February 2016
On Tuesday, February 23, 2016, the NYC/Westchester Chapter held a meeting at Heartland Chophouse in New York, New York. Approximately 20 attendees from seven different hospital medicine groups were present. Guest speaker Moshe Heching, Resident at Beth Israel/Mount Sinai, and winner of the chapter’s local Research, Innovations and Clinical Vignettes (RIV) competition, presented his poster.

October 2015
On Tuesday, October 27, 2015, the NYC/Westchester Chapter held a meeting at Benjamin Steakhouse in White Plains, New York. Attendees from six different hospital medicine groups were present. Guest speaker, Scott Tenner, MD, MPH, JD, FACG, Clinical Professor of Medicine, State University of New York – Health Sciences Center, Board of Trustees, American College of Gastroenterology and Co-Author of Pancreatitis Guidelines, presented on acute pancreatitis.

June 2015
On Tuesday, June 23, 2015, the New York City/Westchester Chapter held chapter meeting at Ben Jack Steakhouse in New York, New York. This meeting featured a follow-up talk from the chapter meeting held on April 28, 2015 with Scott Tenner, MD, JD, on physician collective bargaining. Approximately 20 people were in attendance representing 12 different hospital medicine groups.

April 2015
On Tuesday, April 28, 2015, the New York City/Westchester Chapter held a chapter meeting at Le Marais Restaurant in New York, New York. Approximately 40 people attended, representing 11 different hospital medicine groups. Speaker Scott Tenner, MD, JD, presented on legislative and legal issues in medicine. Upon request from attendees, a follow-up talk by Dr. Tenner will be held on Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at Ben and Jack’s Steakhouse.

September 2014
On Tuesday, September 30, 2014, the New York City/Westchester Chapter hosted a meeting at the Chophouse Brewery in New York, New York. Speaker Alfred Burger, MD, Assistant Dean at Beth Israel Medical Center, and Shai Gavi, DO, MPH, presented on Choosing Wisely®.

October 2013
On Tuesday, October 1, 2013, the New York City/Westchester Chapter held a meeting at Cellini in New York, New York. Speaker John K. Maesaka, MD, presented on “Integrating Innovation into Hospital Practice: The Hospitalist’s Role in Optimal Management of Hyponatremia.” Complimentary CMEs were provided at this meeting.
