News

April 2017
On Thursday, April 20, 2017, the Southwest Georgia Chapter held their spring meeting at the Hilton Garden Inn located in Tifton, GA. The meeting began with cocktail half-hour, followed by a high yield update on latest HAP/VAP guidelines by Daniel Chastain, ID Pharmacist in Albany, GA. This was followed by dinner and a presentation by Dr. Koomson of EP Cardiology. He spoke on Cryptogenic Strokes and Atrial Fibrillation. The presentation shed light on an interesting topic often overlooked in hospital medicine, but very important. We appreciate everyone’s hard work and look forward to the next meeting later this year!

Thank you!

September 2016
On Thursday, September 8, 2016 the Southwest Georgia Chapter held a meeting at The Catch Seafood and Oyster Bar in Albany, Georgia. Approximately 27 attendees were present at the Southwest Georgia meeting. The time to socialize, learn and share ideas in a collaborative environment was invaluable. Through various initiatives outlined in the presentation by Dr. Alan K. Brown, the participants were able to discuss what worked, what didn't work and what could be done differently to improve patient care. The networking opportunity for all (especially students and residents) was well received, providing a casual setting in which to ask questions. In fact, a number of the attendees expressed interest in pursuing a career in hospital medicine after their respective training is complete.

We look forward to the next meeting in the spring of 2017, and thank all those who attended!

February 2016
On Thursday, February 18, 2016, the Southwest Georgia Chapter held a meeting at the Hilton Garden Inn in Tifton, Georgia. Approximately 25 attendees were present from three different hospital medicine groups.  Dr. Jimi S. Malis presented on diagnosis and treatment of urinary tract infections.  Evan Nix, PharmD, spoke about anticoagulation selection strategy.

September 2015
On Thursday, September 10, 2015, the Southwest Georgia Chapter of SHM held their inaugural chapter meeting at Henry Campbell’s Steakhouse in Albany, Georgia.  Approximately 25 people were in attendance, representing three different hospital medicine groups. Guest speaker, Dr. Kaine Brown, Medical Director at Affinity Hospital Medicine Group, presented on the Direction of Hospital Medicine in the Wild (South)west. Dr. Brown described processes that have improved hospital care in our region, with specific data from Tift Regional Health System. Dr. Brown covered multidisciplinary and geographic rounding as methods that have shown promise to reduce readmissions and decrease LOS.

The group was friendly and enthusiastic and enjoyed sharing ideas on how to move the chapter forward. The next event will likely take place in the spring of 2016.
