News

November 2016
On Tuesday, November 15, 2016 the St. Louis Chapter held a meeting at The Chase Park Plaza in St. Louis, Missouri. Approximately 61 attendees were present from two different hospital medicine groups. Larry Wellikson, MD, MHM, CEO of the Society of Hospital Medicine, was the speaker at our November 15 Chapter meeting. His topic was Hospitalists at the Edges; it was not only inspiring but thought provoking as we reflect on how we as hospitalists will play an integral role in the changing healthcare system. There was also a poster session, where attending, residents and medical students presented research or clinical vignettes. Twelve posters were presented in total covering a wide range of topics.

September 2016
On Thursday, September 15, 2016, the Saint Louis Chapter held a meeting at Morton's The Steakhouse in Clayton, Missouri. Approximately 37 attendees were present at the Saint Louis meeting. Guest speaker Dr. Muhammad Waqas Athar gave a talk on heart failure management, which provided up-to-date information on the management of the hospitalized patient with heart failure from when the patient enters the ER until he or she is discharged from the hospital. CME was provided.


June 2016

On Saturday, June 25, 2016, the Saint Louis Chapter held a meeting at Creve Coeur Lake in Maryland Heights, Missouri. Approximately 35 attendees were present at the Saint Louis meeting. We had a record number of attendees participate in the Dragon Boat Festival. We met our goals of not tipping the boat and not coming in last place; in fact, we even won first place in one of our heats!


February 2016
On Thursday, February 11, 2016, the St. Louis Chapter held a meeting at The Chesire in St. Louis, Missouri. Approximately 35 attendees from six different hospitalist medicine groups were present. Guest speakers, Dr. Anoop Agrawal, Assistant Professor, Program Director Med-Peds Residency at Baylor University and Dr. Tyson Pillow, Assistant Professor, Medical Director Simulation and Standardized Patient Program at Baylor University, provided an interactive update on iAttending – a tablet-based patient and resident education platform.

November 2015
On Tuesday, November 17, 2015, the St. Louis Chapter held a chapter meeting and its fourth annual poster display. Approximately 40 attendees were present from several different hospital medicine groups. Guest speaker Dr. Praveen R. Chenna, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Assistant Director, Interventional Pulmonology, Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine, Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine, presented on “Advancing Interventions for Pulmonary Diseases: Pulmonary Nodules to Pleural Disease.”


September 2015
On Thursday, September 10, 2015, the St. Louis Chapter held a meeting at Pastaria in Clayton, Missouri. Approximately 50 people attended representing 12 different hospital medicine groups. Dr. Douglas Carlson, SFHM, Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics, Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, Medical Direct, St. John’s Children’s Hospital, presented on “Building a Sustainable Career in Hospital Medicine.  Dr. Carlson and his topic was well received by the audience.  The chapter is looking forward to hosting another great meeting this November. 
 
April 2014
The SHM St. Louis Chapter met on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at Cardwell's in Clayton to discuss “Advanced Antiplatelet Therapy for NSTEMI in the Upstream Care Setting." There were 23 in attendance, including internal medicine and pediatric physicians, nurse practitioners and practice administrators from Memorial Hospital, IPC, Washington University, Barnes Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children's Hospital. The evening began with a welcome by Dr. Myra Rubio, Co-President of the St. Louis Chapter. Dr. Rubio then announced this year’s Chapter Fellow and Senior Fellow in Hospital Medicine awardees. Dr. Robert Mahoney updated attendees on HM14. Dr. Lois Richard, Co-President of the St. Louis Chapter, made local announcements. While the originally scheduled speaker was unable to attend in person because of a tornado-related flight delay, a different speaker was able to give the presentation by phone. Despite tornado-related interruptions, the talk was well received by those in attendance.

February 2014
On Wednesday, February 26, 2014 the St. Louis Chapter held its first meeting of the year at Wild Flower Loft to discuss "These Things Happen: How Patient Harm Occurs and What We Can Do About It." There were 59 in attendance, including internal medicine and pediatric physicians, nurse practitioners and practice administrators from Memorial Hospital, IPC, Washington University, Barnes Jewish Hospital, St. Louis Children’s Hospital, St. Luke’s Hospital, St. Anthony’s Medical Center, Christian Hospital, The Rehabilitation Institute of St. Louis, Health South and the John Cochran VA Medical Center. The evening began with a welcome by Dr. Myra Rubio, Co-President of the St. Louis Chapter.  Dr. Lois Richard, Co-President of the St. Louis Chapter, then discussed HM14, the St. Louis Chapter’s Platinum Award and announced the chapter's Fellows and Senior Fellow in Hospital Medicine awardees. Dr. Chrissy Hrach, Chapter Vice President, announced the St. Louis Chapter Abstract Competition Resident Scholarship Award recipient, Dr. Corrine Hamvas. Dr. Rubio then introduced the St. Louis Chapter Outstanding Achievement Award recipient, Christopher Chen. Christopher Chen presented the platform presentation he will give at HM14. Mr. Paul Levy then gave his thought-provoking presentation followed by a book signing. Closing remarks were provided by Dr. Anna Arroyo Plasencia, Chapter President-Elect.

February 2014
On Thursday, February 12, 2015, the St. Louis Chapter held a chapter meeting at Kreis’ Steakhouse and Bar in St. Louis, Missouri. Approximately 50 attendees were present, representing eight different hospital medicine groups. The meeting began with networking and hors d’oeuvres, followed by dinner and a presentation on impacting healthcare policy in Washington DC from Joshua Boswell, SHM Director of Government Relations and Joshua Lapps, SHM Government Relations Manager.

May 2013
On Thursday, May 2, 2013, the St. Louis Chapter met at McCormick & Schmick’s in DesPeres, Missouri. The meeting brought in 37 attendees who enjoyed a presentation on "St. Louis Healthcare Safety Net at Crossroads, Report from the Trenches." Guest speakers included Robert Fruend, Jr., John P. Lynch, MD and Heidi Miller, MD.
