Upcoming Meetings

The Tampa Bay Area Chapter, originally called the Western Florida Chapter, was established in December 2012. In the spring of 2015, the chapter decided to expand its geography and become the Tampa Bay Area Chapter. Below you will find meeting details about the most recent chapter events.


May 2017
On Monday, May 15th, 2017, the Tampa Bay Chapter held a meeting at Fleming's Steakhouse in Tampa, Florida. There were 30 hospitalists present from six different hospital medicine groups.

Dr. Kimberly Lamartin, MD and Dr. Byron Moran, MD discussed Transitions of Care (TOC). The presentation shed light on the historical backdrop of TOC, the at-risk populations, and highlighted a few classic TOC interventions. TOC data from the University of South Florida’s Internal Medicine department was shared with attendees. The presentation was well received by the 30 hospitalists in attendance and was followed by a valuable question and answer session.

A free resident membership was raffled off at the conclusion of the meeting to encourage residents with interest in hospital medicine to actively participate in the chapter.

March 2016
On Wednesday, March 16, 2016, the Tampa Bay Area Chapter held a meeting at Bascoms Chop House in Clearwater, Florida. Diagnostic radiologist Dr. Melissa McGettigan presented on radiology pearls.

October 2015
On Thursday, October 29, 2015, the Tampa Bay Area Chapter held a meeting at Roy’s Restaurant in Tampa Bay, Florida. Attendees from five different hospital medicine groups were present. Guest speakers included Bridge Healthcare Clinic Directors Bailee Olliff and Stephanie Hudey and Dr. Siddique from Red Crescent Clinic of Tampa Bay. Attendees were able to network and learn about free clinics in Tampa Bay and opportunities to volunteer.

May 2015
On Thursday, May 21, 2015, the Tampa Bay Area Chapter held a meeting at Ruth’s Chris Steak House in Tampa, Florida.  Approximately 20 individuals were in attendance from seven different hospital medicine groups. Speaker Brooke Baldwin, MD, Chief of Dermatology at James A. Haley VA Hospital, presented on Cutaneous Drug Reactions for Hospitalists.

January 2015
On Thursday, January 22, 2015, the Western Florida Chapter met at Shula's Steakhouse in Tampa, Florida. The meeting opened with a reception, followed by announcements. The upcoming annual meeting, Hospital Medicine 2015, was among the announcements as well as encouragement for attendees that evening to become SHM members if not already a member. The speaker for the evening was Dr. Rachel Irby, MD, of Infectious Disease Associates of Tampa Bay. Dr. Irby gave a very informative talk regarding updated in infectious diseases pertinent to hospitalists. Her topic was very well received with a very interactive discussion from participants throughout the talk.

February 2014
On Tuesday, February 25, 2014 the Western Florida Chapter met at Malio’s Prime Steakhouse in Tampa, Florida. Jordan Messler, MD, gave an excellent talk on the Choosing Wisely® Campaign, which was very well received. Dr. Deruelle then explained the SGR fix and handed out on overview where the group voted unanimously to support.

Dr. Deruelle also solicited potential candidates for succession of presidency. Overall, the Chapter had a great evening and was excited to expand to the Tampa Bay area.

June 2013
On Thursday, June 13, 2013, the Western Florida Chapter met at Roy’s Hawaiian Fusion in Tampa, Florida. The Chapter had an interactive dinner meeting with Dr. Deruelle leading a talk with slides and a presentation on the ACA and its upcoming implications in hospitals and hospitalists. There was an excellent exchange of thoughts and ideas from all who attended.

An update was done on those who attended the SHM National Meeting in Washington, DC. There was a need for another officer for this Chapter and Barry Zalmon, DO, with ACH Hospitalists, Brandon, Florida agreed to be an officer.

The Chapter discussed the need to pursue more nationally known speakers and commence the next meeting in three to four months at a location closer to the Brandon, Florida area to get more attendance and grow the Chapter.
