Pediatric Hospitalists

The Society of Hospital Medicine’s (SHM’s) Pediatrics Section was developed to increase recognition and awareness of the care of hospitalized children. This network of committed pediatric hospitalists support and collaborate with the SHM Pediatric Committee to enhance awareness of pediatric issues across SHM. In conjunction with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Academic Pediatric Association (APA), SHM’s Pediatrics Section and Pediatric Committee work to further the field of pediatric hospital medicine.

What is a Pediatric Hospitalist?

Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM) focuses on the general medical care of hospitalized children, typically from birth to age 18 or 21 years of age. Practitioners in PHM can come from several disciplines, including pediatrics, family practice and med-peds, and can have various credentials, including MD, DO, ARNP or PA. Pediatric hospitalists care for hospitalized children in many settings, including the pediatric ward, newborn nursery, neonatal intensive care unit, pediatric intensive care unit and emergency department. Their activities can include patient care, teaching, research and leadership.
