Hospitalists practicing in rural locations disproportionately struggle with recruiting, scheduling and advocacy. With little to no backup, these physicians work unrelenting schedules. Practicing in underserved locations, this group struggles with finding ways to do more with fewer resources. The objective of this Section is to recognize this unique niche in hospital medicine and provide a forum wherein practicing rural hospitalists may collaborate with their colleagues and share ideas, resources and models of care that have been successful in their respective unique practice environments. It is also expected that participating Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) members may, together, find solutions that will positively affect patient care in their communities.
Connect with other rural hospitalists via SHM's Hospital Medicine Exchange, an exclusive online member community for networking and collaboration featuring discussion forums, resource libraries and a member directory.
