Context for Use
Instrument for evaluating depression in elderly when there is a clinical  suspicion of depression or positive response to a screening question (e.g.- “Do you often feel sad or depressed?”).  Major or minor depression is very common in hospitalized elderly patients.


Widely used and recognized instrument that is easily and briefly administered (<=5 minutes).  Score greater than 5 suggests depression.


Meaningful result requires scoring all items.
