Clinical Toolbox

Context for Use
When patients’ behavior or mobility impairments risk their own safety or interferes with treatment this menu provides management options and prevention measures.

Identifies pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic strategies to manage the agitated or delirious patient.  Calls attention to treatment of agitation, prevention of delirium and assessment of mobility status — shown to be important factors in inpatient morbidity and prolonged length of stay.

Alternatives described in the menu require excellent support from nursing staff and may require significant modification of hospital culture.
