Perspective Written by Lilia Cervantes, MD Highlights Healthcare Access Inequities for Undocumented Immigrants and Need for Policy Change

The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) recently announced that an article written by Lilia Cervantes, MD in the Journal of Hospital Medicine (JHM), the official peer-reviewed journal of SHM, was selected as a finalist for FOLIO Magazine’s 2021 Eddie Awards for Editorial Excellence.

“We are delighted that groundbreaking, thought-provoking articles in JHM are being recognized as valuable to the hospital medicine community and beyond,” says Samir S. Shah, MD, MSCE, MHM, Editor-in-Chief of JHM. “Our motto is ‘Leading by Example,’ and this honor clearly demonstrates that JHM fosters innovation and critical thinking across the board, from research to perspectives.”

The article, “Dialysis in the Undocumented: Driving Policy Change with Data,” appeared in the “Perspectives in Hospital Medicine” series in JHM in 2019 and is a finalist in the “Essays and Criticism” category. In the perspective, Dr. Cervantes explores her encounters with Hilda, an undocumented Mexican immigrant with end-stage kidney disease who struggled to receive the proper care she needed, and related injustices in the healthcare system. The lack of access to proper care was the catalyst for further research on marginalized patients without access to healthcare, which earned Dr. Cervantes interviews with NPR and CNN’s Chief Health Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta.

“As someone who proudly advocates for marginalized communities and strives to eliminate structural inequities, I am elated that this article is in the running for an Eddie Award,” notes Dr. Cervantes. “Thank you to the FOLIO team for this honor and to the JHM team for supporting and publishing my work.”

Dr. Cervantes is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at Denver Health Medical Center and the University of Colorado and is strongly committed to promoting diversity through patient care, community service, research, and health policy activism. Her research and advocacy have led to Colorado Medicaid expanding access to scheduled dialysis for undocumented immigrants with kidney failure. She was also the recipient of SHM’s 2021 Award of Excellence for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Winners of this year’s Eddie and Ozzie Awards will be announced on October 14 at a gala in New York City.
