The hospitalist service at MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) treats approximately 25,000 patients annually. MDACC is one of the largest cancer research centers in the world. As such, the institution provides an exceptional environment for oncology education and research. The section of hospitalist medicine provides a gateway to a unique perspective into the complexity and management of the oncology patient in the hospital setting. There is an unparalleled variety of pathology and a multiplicity of medical problems seen by the hospitalists at MDACC. The clinical training is based on direct involvement in patient care under the supervision of a full-time faculty physician. Fellows will have the opportunity to benefit from active interaction with all medical disciplines involved in the care of the hospitalized cancer patient.
The Department of General Internal Medicine at MDACC is home to the R25 Methods Training in Patient-Centered Cancer Outcomes Research grant, which provides a didactic training program for all fellows with little to no prior training in research methods. The program includes basic learning modules in the form of online multimedia lectures prepared by experts in the field. The lectures will cover the basic learning program including research methodology and biostatistics for observational studies, pragmatic clinical trials, healthcare delivery evaluations, systematic reviews, and decision analysis. Advanced learning modules will also be available for those with previous research training through webinars, face-to-face workshops, and online learning forums. In addition, all fellows will be subject to the same detailed quality assurance oversight and quality improvement strategies required of all faculty within the Department of General Internal Medicine.

*Able to sponsor J1 Visa candidates.* The Hospitalist Fellowship Program at CHI St Alexius Health in Bismarck, ND is a one year program. It was started in 2012 in collaboration with the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences. The program is designed for family medicine or internal medicine graduates who are interested in pursuing a career as a hospitalist. The fellowship program is well received, successful and continues to grow. Currently we accept two fellows each year. The fellows work directly with the St Alexius hospitalist team. The field of hospital medicine is now well-established and continues to grow, with demand for hospitalists far out-weighing supply. With the concentrated inpatient training our fellowship provides, our graduates will be well-prepared to effectively practice hospital medicine in a variety of hospital settings. Enhanced skills and experience will allow the fellow to command more interest from hospital programs unaware of the potential for excellent hospital care by hospitalists trained in family or internal medicine.

In addition to core rotations in hospital medicine, newborn, complex care, co-management, and sedation, individualized rotations in intensive care, emergency medicine, palliative care, surgery, child abuse and neglect, and pain management are available. All rotations are structured to permit independent medical decision-making with graduated autonomy.
