Throughout the pandemic, hospitalists have continued to be at the forefront of the COVID-19 response, helping to lead frontline work, orchestrating complex and dynamic clinical operational plans, and partnering with clinicians and leaders from many different specialties.1,2 Many patients that hospitalists routinely care for, including the complex medically ill, the elderly, and patients of low-socioeconomic status (SES), have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic. These are patients who are at the greatest risk of dying or experiencing poor health outcomes. Hospitalization represents a crucial, and sometimes only, intersection with the healthcare system for many patients in this country.
Hospitalists are leading discussions at the bedside with their patients about the availability and benefits of COVID-19 vaccines and SHM wants to help.
SHM has partnered with a team of hospitalist faculty to develop resources that equip clinicians with the requisite education, strategies, and resources they need to facilitate discussions with hospitalized patients, increase vaccine acceptance, and reduce vaccine hesitancy within their institutions and communities.
