The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) is a medical society comprised of hospitalists that exists to promote exceptional care for hospitalized patients.
The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) recently announced the release of the 2016 State of Hospital Medicine (SoHM) Report, including an enhanced, searchable digital version for easier mobile access. The biennial report summarizes data collected from 595 hospital medicine groups (HMGs) representing 8,614 providers over the 2015 calendar year related to how the groups are configured and operated.
“The SoHM Report is an indispensable tool for hospital medicine program leaders, frontline hospitalists and hospitalist employers,” explains Beth Hawley, MBA, SFHM, FACHE, Chief Operating Officer of SHM. “In a rapidly changing healthcare environment where demand for hospitalists exceeds supply, it is imperative that we provide the tools and resources to assist hospital medicine groups to operate at peak efficiency, while ensuring job satisfaction and exceptional patient care.”
Data included in the SoHM Report encompasses cutting-edge knowledge on hospitalist compensation and production in addition to practice demographics, staffing levels, turnover, staff growth and financial support, among other domains. This data assists practice administrators, HMG leaders, hospital executives, consultants and researchers in benchmarking their HMGs against others to inform evidence-based management decisions.
The 2016 Report includes new questions focused on the value of CME allowances for hospitalists, charge capture methodologies being used by HMGs, the percentage of a hospital’s total patient volume the HMG was responsible for and more. Two key findings from the 2016 Report include:
