The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) is extremely concerned over the imminent impact of the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” signed into law on the afternoon of Friday, July 4. This budget reconciliation package contains significant cuts to the Medicaid program; a critical lifeline for nearly 20% of Americans, including a large share of pregnant women, children, people living with disabilities, senior citizens, and low-income adults.
Medicaid is the safety net for our nation, and these drastic cuts will jeopardize the health, well-being, and safety of millions of Americans. Not only will the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” result in fewer people having much-needed healthcare coverage, but it will also accelerate the closure of rural hospitals, limiting access to care for communities far beyond just the Medicaid population.
SHM continues to oppose any cuts to Medicaid and reaffirms its commitment to advocate for programs that are vital to the health and well-being of our patients.
