ABIM & Focused Practice in Hospital Medicine (FPHM) Program Retirement

ABIM has announced that it will retire the Focused Practice in Hospital Medicine (FPHM) program at the end of 2023 and launch new inpatient-focused versions of the Internal Medicine Longitudinal Knowledge Assessment (LKA®) and traditional 10-year Internal Medicine Maintenance of Certification Exam in January 2024. This program will follow the same exam blueprint, without many of the prerequisites required for the FPHM.

SHM has long advocated that hospitalists deserve an exam option closely aligned with their day-to-day hospital-based practice. We believe the process ABIM used to evaluate how to best serve hospitalists was rigorous, and this decision reflects the preferences of a majority of members. SHM hopes the new inpatient assessment options will make it easier for hospitalists to choose a recertification pathway that resembles practice. With Spark remaining the best practice tool for the new inpatient IM pathways, it’s easy to feel confident about recertification. For more information about recertification assessment options and FAQs, please visit the ABIM website.

Spark has helped me gain and solidify my medical knowledge. For this edition of Spark, there are so many wonderful, dedicated hospitalists and content experts who have been willing to put in a lot of work for peer coaching, peer education, and our hospitalist knowledge bases.

Haruka Torok, MD, SFHM

Spark has been helpful for me as I refresh on content that I don’t see every day with patients. I love that each question comes with an answer, explanation, and key takeaways.

Kim Tartaglia, MD, SFHM

Spark is an amazing resource to prepare yourself for the Focused Practice in Hospital Medicine exam. The questions are written and curated by hospitalists and focused on what the average hospitalist should know and needs to know to pass the exam. The thoughtful, amazing work included in Spark has been created by our own members at SHM. All the content reflects on clinical scenarios, questions, and how to apply the most up-to-date knowledge.
