The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) is a medical society comprised of hospitalists that exists to promote exceptional care for hospitalized patients.
Hospitalists often encounter patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) but may lack the knowledge to assess patients with suspected OUD, manage withdrawal, initiate treatment in the hospital, or link patients to care in the outpatient setting. Hospitalists and other hospital-based clinicians require the knowledge and strategies to competently treat, fluently facilitate patient-centered conversations about treatment, and support care transition plans and safe discharges.
SHM has developed these resources to assist hospitalist-led teams in supporting the implementation of interventions to improve the care of hospitalized patients with OUD in hospital settings.
