Featured Address Part of SHM’s “Year of the Hospitalist” Celebration, Recognizing 20th Anniversary of Hospital Medicine

In addition to welcoming over 3,000 hospitalists to Hospital Medicine 2016 (HM16), the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) is proud to announce a featured address by United States Surgeon General Vice Admiral (VADM) Vivek H. Murthy, MD, MBA on Monday, March 7, 2016, as part of HM16’s opening plenary in San Diego, California. This special addition to HM16 solidifies its position as the premier and largest educational and networking event for healthcare professionals who specialize in hospital medicine.

“We are extremely honored to welcome Dr. Murthy to an already stellar HM16 lineup as we celebrate the ‘Year of the Hospitalist,’” notes SHM’s Chief Executive Officer, Larry Wellikson, MD, MHM. “As a proven leader in hospital medicine, Dr. Murthy’s dedication to improving the health of the American people – and those around the world – will make for a must-see keynote for our attendees.”

Dr. Murthy has devoted himself to improving public health through the lens of service, clinical care, research, education and entrepreneurship. In addition to clinical practice, Dr. Murthy has two decades of experience and perspective improving health in communities around the world. At HM16 Dr. Murthy will discuss The Role of Hospitalists in Today’s Healthcare Environment.

Dr. Murthy joins a lineup of esteemed speakers, including Dr. Karen DeSalvo, MD, MPC, MSC, and Acting Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services and Dr. Robert M. Watcher, who coined the term “hospitalist” in a New England Journal of Medicine article with co-author Dr. Lee Goldman twenty years ago in 1996. In celebration of this twenty-year anniversary, SHM will feature celebrations throughout the year as part of the “Year of the Hospitalist.”

“We look forward to presenting not only an extensive portfolio of clinical knowledge, quality improvement initiatives and networking opportunities, but a speaker lineup of extremely influential individuals in hospital medicine,” says Melissa Mattison, MD, FACP, SFHM. “HM16 will equip hospitalists with the knowledge and tools they need to transform healthcare and revolutionize patient care.”
