Society Among 20 Small Companies Recognized for Culture, Compensation, Benefits, and Trust in Senior Leadership Based on Employee Feedback
The Philadelphia Business Journal announced its 2025 Greater Philadelphia Best Places to Work and named the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) as one of 20 recipients in the small company category and one of 80 overall. Per the Business Journal, Best Places to Work in Philadelphia foster a workplace where employees willingly go above and beyond in their work, advocate for the organization, and intend to stay into the future.
“We are honored to be recognized again as a Best Place to Work, especially because this is the direct result of staff feedback,” says Eric E. Howell, MD, MHM, SHM Chief Executive Officer. “I am grateful to partner with such a talented team to continue advancing SHM’s mission, while building and nurturing a collaborative, supportive, inclusive culture.”
Developed in 2004, the annual Best Places to Work survey issued by Quantum Workplace measures a wide range of research-validated factors that impact employee engagement and satisfaction, including:
- Career Growth & Development
- Communication & Resources
- Diversity & Inclusion
- Engagement Outcomes
- Future Outlook
- Individual Needs
- Manager Effectiveness
- Team Dynamics
- Trust in Leadership
SHM offers employees numerous benefits to support work-life balance and professional success, including a fully remote workplace, generous PTO schedule, and community-building events. While the workforce is fully remote, SHM invites staff to gather in person monthly for an all-staff meeting and social event to ensure personal connections are made.
To further support this, SHM recently partnered with Ivy Consulting Group for a virtual training, “Creating a Sense of Belonging in a Virtual Environment.” This allowed staff to share ways in which they can strengthen ties and professional relationships, while respecting everyone's individual communication styles and preferences. Additionally, SHM has scheduled numerous wellness training sessions to ensure staff members are aware of steps they can take to improve their well-being, both in and outside of the workplace.
“We often hear from staff at all levels of the organization that SHM is the best place they have ever worked,” notes Joi Seabrooks, PHR, SHM Vice President of Human Resources. “We do not take that for granted and always strive to identify new opportunities to engage our staff and strengthen our culture, both virtually and in person.”
The top three placegetters in each Best Places to Work category will be revealed in a print edition of the Philadelphia Business Journal on July 25 and at a celebratory event in Philadelphia on July 24.
