Hawley Brings Years of Healthcare Insight & Organizational Leadership to Fortify Society’s Mission of Improving Care of Hospitalized Patients

The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) recently announced the arrival of Beth Hawley, MBA, SFHM, FACHE as Chief Operating Officer. Ms. Hawley joins the society with a wealth of expertise in quality improvement, practice management, strategy development, public policy and organizational leadership at some of the nation’s largest healthcare management organizations.

“Having been involved with SHM for 16 years as a member, committee member and senior fellow, I am honored to have been asked to serve as Chief Operating Officer,” says Ms. Hawley. “I am struck with the potential for unprecedented change and possibility for our hospitalist community and hope to assist our capable SHM team and volunteers in creating a powerfully positive vision that connects our members’ needs with the products, tools and experiences that our members value.”

In her new role as Chief Operating Officer at SHM, Ms. Hawley is charged with leading a highly motivated leadership team’s strategic planning, directing several key programs and operations functions, and defining and achieving organizational goals.

Prior to joining SHM, Ms. Hawley held several leadership roles in prominent healthcare organizations, including Senior Vice President for Strategic Initiatives at IPC Healthcare and TeamHealth and Chief Customer Experience Officer at Cogent Healthcare.

“After collaborating with Beth frequently throughout my tenure at SHM, I now have the privilege of calling her a colleague,” notes Laurence Wellikson, MD, MHM, Chief Executive Officer of SHM. “Her valuable perspective from years of working in hospital medicine will provide our staff with the resources and guidance needed to expand SHM’s brand and increase our impact on hospitalists, patients and the greater healthcare community.”

Ms. Hawley holds a BS from Drexel University, an MBA from Eastern University, a Certificate in Occupational Therapy from the University of Pennsylvania and a Certificate of Achievement as a Green Belt in Six Sigma from Villanova University. She is a Senior Fellow in Hospital Medicine with SHM and has served on its Practice Analysis and the Performance, Measurement and Reporting Committees. She is also a Fellow with the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE).
