Applicants are expected to conduct scholarly work according to the highest scientific and ethical standards and in compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and policies regarding protection of human research subjects, humane care, and laboratory safety (if applicable).

SHM is committed to a grant application review process that does not exclude any underrepresented groups in hospital medicine and appreciates projects that seek to identify and address disparities experienced by marginalized populations. All members of underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply for the SHM Conference Grant. For more information on SHM’s Commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion please click here.

*The complimentary registration is non-transferable and only valid to the conference for which the project was selected, regardless of whether the conference takes place in-person or virtually. The $1,000 travel-related reimbursement will not be awarded if the conference is in virtual-only format.

Review and Selection Process

  • The application period for the Physicians in Training Conference Grant will coincide with the annual Research, Innovations, and Clinical Vignettes (RIV) call for abstract submissions. This period will approximately span from September to early December.
  • At the time of abstract submission, applicants should indicate whether they wish to be considered for a conference grant. Should applicants fulfill the above eligibility criteria, an invitation to apply will be extended.
  • Abstracts will be initially screened and scored by the SHM RIV Committee for novelty and scientific merits of the research project or quality improvement initiative.
  • Applicants’ abstracts who are accepted for poster presentation at the national meeting AND achieve a threshold score greater than 5 (scale of 1 to 10) will be considered eligible for review by the Physicians-in-Training (PIT) Committee. The top 20 eligible abstracts, as determined by the RIV committee, will be reviewed by the PIT committee in order to select the final award recipients.
  • Additional criteria for consideration:
    • Applicant’s educational qualifications and record of scholarly productivity and/or leadership
    • Degree of involvement in project design and execution
