Insight from Three Hospital Medicine Leaders to Ensure Continued Impact of the Specialty on Improving Patient Care

Earlier this month at Hospital Medicine 2016 in San Diego, CA, the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM)’s Chief Executive Officer, Laurence Wellikson, MD, MHM, announced that Brian Harte, MD, SFHM, was elected President of SHM’s Board of Directors and Ron Greeno, MD, MHM, was voted President-Elect. Tracy Cardin, ACNP-BC, SFHM was also elected to the board as the first NP/PA member.

“I feel privileged to be President – SHM’s board this year reflects an extraordinary diversity of talents and hospitalist careers,” explained Dr. Harte. “Together, we must lead our health system to be ever-more patient-centered, educate our members and partners on how we can work together to best manage patients in alternative payment models and continue to engage and grow our membership.”

Brian Harte, MD, SFHM, newly-elected President of SHM’s Board of Directors, is also the President of Hillcrest Hospital, a 500-bed hospital in Mayfield Heights, Ohio and a flagship hospital of the Cleveland Clinic Health System. With experience as a hospitalist in both private practice and academic programs and as the former Chairman of the Department of Hospital Medicine and the Medicine Institute at Cleveland Clinic, he brings a wealth of insight to lead SHM. Dr. Harte attended college at Yale University, medical school at the University of Pennsylvania and completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.

Board President-Elect, Ron Greeno, MD, MHM is a founding member of SHM and serves as the Chief Strategy Officer for IPC Healthcare. During his time with SHM, he has played a critical role in the organization’s advocacy efforts on The Hill in Washington, DC, including the recent CMS approval of a dedicated billing code for hospitalists. He was the founder of Cogent Healthcare, where he served as Executive Vice President for Strategy and Innovation, and is a nationally recognized expert on hospitalist programs and their clinical and administrative management. He has received board certification in internal, pulmonary and critical care medicine.

New board member Tracy Cardin, ACNP-BC, SFHM, is a nurse practitioner in the Section of Hospital Medicine at the University of Chicago and is the first NP/PA ever to be elected to SHM’s Board of Directors. She has over twenty years of inpatient experience, is the current chairperson for SHM’s NP/PA Committee and is an active contributor to The Hospital Leader, SHM’s official blog. Her interests include integration of NP/PA providers into hospital medicine groups and communication in difficult situations.

“I am honored to officially join the SHM Board of Directors and represent the NP/PA membership at the board level,” said Cardin. “It is clear, now more than ever, that SHM values and supports a ‘big tent’ philosophy by ensuring all kinds of practitioners contribute to the organization’s success at every level, making it stronger, more nimble and more innovative.”
