Noteworthy Honor Reserved for Leaders Making Significant Contributions to Hospital Medicine

The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) recently announced two new recipients of its hallmark Master in Hospital Medicine (MHM) designation. Brian Harte, MD, MHM and Samir S. Shah, MD, MSCE, MHM will be honored on March 25 at Hospital Medicine 2019 (HM19), the largest educational and networking event dedicated to hospital medicine. Introduced in 2010, the MHM designation honors those who demonstrate excellence in the principles of leadership, teamwork and quality improvement within the specialty of hospital medicine.

“Drs. Harte and Shah are two of the brightest leaders in hospital medicine today,” notes Laurence Wellikson, MD, MHM, Chief Executive Officer of SHM. “They are truly worthy of joining the other 28 Masters in Hospital Medicine that have been recognized by SHM for their contributions to American medicine and to a specialty that now has more than 62,000 hospitalists in the US. This is truly the hall of fame for our specialty.”

SHM is proud to recognize the following new Masters in Hospital Medicine for their outstanding contributions to SHM and the hospital medicine specialty:

  • Brian Harte, MD, MHM, President of Cleveland Clinic Akron General Hospital and the Southern Region, in honor of his dedication to the specialty of hospital medicine and to SHM as an exceptional clinician and inspiring leader. Because of his expertise in improving hospital operations, Dr. Harte has developed and grown the presence of hospital medicine throughout the Cleveland Clinic network while continuing to uphold the highest standards of clinical care. In addition to his role as a hospital president, he is also an Associate Professor of Medicine at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. At SHM, Dr. Harte was on the Board of Directors for 6 years, including roles as President and Treasurer. He has served on a number of SHM Committees, including the Annual Meeting Committee and Public Policy Committee. He also has been a Deputy Editor for the Journal of Hospital Medicine for 9 years and was instrumental in the development of the “Clinical Care Conundrums” series.

  • Samir S. Shah, MD, MSCE, MHM, Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and Director of the Division of Hospital Medicine and Chief Metrics Officer at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, where he holds the James M. Ewell Endowed Chair, as a stellar researcher and devoted mentor. Dr. Shah is a leading figure in the founding and growth of pediatric hospital medicine, assuring that research is a central focus of the specialty and its continuing evolution. He has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed publications and 150 book chapters. Dr. Shah has served as the primary research mentor to more than 85 medical students, residents, junior faculty and post-doctoral students. While his individual research accomplishments are exceptional, his more enduring impact in pediatric hospital medicine has been in creating and growing research networks to expand the field. In January 2019, Dr. Shah became the third Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Hospital Medicine, SHM’s flagship peer-reviewed publication.
