Ms. McGrath Strives to Promote Bidirectional Mentorship Among NPs/PAs and Physicians

The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) recently announced the recipients of its 2023 Awards of Excellence, honoring hospitalists who are advancing hospital medicine through innovation, education, and advocacy.

“Hospital medicine continues to grow at a rapid pace, and we need leaders and innovators in the field to ensure that its future remains bright for years to come,” explains Eric E. Howell, MD, MHM, Chief Executive Officer of the Society of Hospital Medicine. “This year’s Awards of Excellence recipients are among those who have risen to the challenge and contributed not only to the advancement of hospital medicine, but to the overall state of healthcare nationwide.”

Bridget A. McGrath, MPAS, PA-C, FHM is this year’s recipient in the “Excellence in Clinical Leadership for NPs/PAs” category. She currently serves as the University of Chicago hospital-level Advanced Practice Provider Executive Council Chair. Ms. McGrath graduated in 2014 from Butler University’s Physician Assistant Program and started her career as a med-peds hospital medicine PA at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, Indiana. She transitioned to the University of Chicago in 2017 and serves as the Section of Hospital Medicine Advanced Practice Provider Manager and Interprofessional Education co-lead.

In her current role, Ms. McGrath oversees the clinical performance, staffing, and career mentorship of the NP/PA hospital medicine team. Her academic focus is on assessment and development of professional development opportunities that promote bidirectional mentorship among NPs/PAs and physicians. She aligns care delivery with section and hospital priorities by identifying and implementing clinical operations, quality improvement, and medical education initiatives.

Within SHM, she has held leadership positions in the Academic Committee and NP/PA Special Interest Group. Through her service, she co-developed a national multi-site onboarding survey, leading to the published SHM NP/PA Onboarding Case Studies. Additionally, she co-led the pilot year of NP/PA inclusion in Academic Speed Mentoring.

Awards of Excellence winners were recognized at SHM’s annual conference, SHM Converge, held from March 26-29, 2023, in Austin, TX. For more information on SHM’s Awards of Excellence, visit hospitalmedicine.org/awards.
