Dr. Hunt Recognized for Consistent, Long-Standing Service and Citizenship to Patients, Colleagues, and the Field of Hospital Medicine

The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) recently named four new Masters in Hospital Medicine (MHM) to honor those who have demonstrated a longstanding commitment to the principles of leadership, teamwork, and quality improvement within the specialty of hospital medicine. Daniel Payson Hunt, MD, MHM, has been elected a Master in Hospital Medicine in honor of his consistent, long-standing service and citizenship to patients, colleagues, and the field of hospital medicine.

“This year’s Masters in Hospital Medicine embody what it means to be a leader in the field and reflect the multitude of ways in which hospitalists positively impact patient care,” says Eric E. Howell, MD, MHM, Chief Executive Officer of the Society of Hospital Medicine. “Their dedication and innovation have helped to trailblaze a path for thousands of other hospitalists, guiding and empowering them to achieve the very best for their hospitals, their patients, and their communities.”

Dr. Hunt is the Director of the Emory Division of Hospital Medicine, where he has nurtured a culture of kindness and respect, while developing and augmenting the research and scholarship infrastructure within the division. Some of Dr. Hunt’s most innovative changes in the division have been in faculty development. He supported the infrastructure for an Associate Division Director for Faculty Development role and encouraged a mentoring framework with significant positive impacts on recruitment and retention.

Dr. Hunt helped lead the Emory Division of Hospital Medicine’s expansion into Grady Memorial Hospital – one of the largest public hospitals in the nation – and supported division leadership for the addition of a large two-hospital medical system in addition to a long-term acute care hospital.

Dr. Hunt has been an active member of SHM since 2005. During that time, he has demonstrated an impressive commitment to scholarship. He has previously served as Associate Editor and Deputy Editor of the Journal of Hospital Medicine. He has given numerous presentations and workshops at SHM Annual Conferences since 2011, including the popular “Stump the Professor” session. He has also served as faculty at the Academic Hospitalist Academy. Dr. Hunt operates as a catalyst to help others grow and succeed and has been an advocate for the hospitalist movement since its inception.

The newest Masters in Hospital Medicine were recognized at SHM’s annual conference, SHM Converge, held from March 26-29, 2023, in Austin, TX. For more information on SHM’s Master in Hospital Medicine designation and to view all previous recipients, visit hospitalmedicine.org/fellows.
