About Membership

At SHM, our members are our mission.

From education to professional development, SHM is laser-focused on providing hospital medicine-specific opportunities, including networking, advocacy and leadership development to take your career to the next level.  Above all, joining SHM will empower you to make a positive impact on patients and the entire hospital medicine community.

Membership Categories

SHM welcomes all members of the hospital medicine team. 

Annual dues are set by member category. Increases are not based on tenure or years of practice.

Dues rates are valid through September 30, 2020. 1-, 2- and 3-year memberships are available.


Annual Dues:  $445/year
Practicing hospitalist physicians, including those focused on research and/or education.

NPs and PAs

Annual Dues:  $215/year
Hospital medicine nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

International Hospitalists

Annual Dues: $115/year
Non-US and non-Canadian individuals are eligible to join SHM at a reduced membership rate with digital access to SHM publications. View additional member benefits below.

Practice Administrators

Annual Dues:  $215/year
Hospital medicine administrators and managers.

Allied Health Professionals

Annual Dues:  $215/year
Registered nurses, hospital pharmacists and other practitioners working in hospital medicine.


Annual Dues:  $425/year
Practitioners working in hospital medicine including healthcare policy analysts, medical librarians, etc.

Residents and Fellows

Annual Dues: $95/year
PG1, PG2, PG3 residents or fellows interested in learning more about a career in hospital medicine.

Medical Students

Medical students may join SHM free of charge.
Students actively enrolled in accredited programs including MD, DO, NP and PA programs.

Group Memberships

Discounts are available for group memberships comprised of 10 or more individuals.

Hospitalists who have been a member of SHM for 10 or more years, are 65 years of age or older and are working fewer than 20 hours per week are eligible to renew their memberships at a special Emeritus rate. Please call 800-843-3360 for more information.

Get Involved

As a member of SHM, your voice and participation are an integral part of our organization and help us positively impact the practice of hospital medicine. Here are some of the ways you can become more involved with SHM and identify yourself as a leader in hospital medicine.

  • Volunteer on an SHM Committee

    Play a larger role in SHM’s major initiatives, from building resources for the specialty to ensuring that SHM remains at the forefront of hospital medicine.

  • Join a SIG Executive Council

    SHM's Special Interest Groups (SIGs) allow members to connect with peers who share practice interests and/or type. Each SIG is lead by an executive council thatserve a one-year term or multi-year term depending on position and/or the objectives of the SIG.
